Mumbai: Police in western Maharashtra's Kolhapur town are baffled after a thief stole items worth around Rs. 75,000 from a state government office and pinned an "I'm sorry" note on a table.
The thief, who targeted the Animal Husbandry Office, decamped with three computers and a photocopy machine on Saturday evening after the staff had left for the day.
The incident came to light when the office reopened on Monday, following which a police complaint was filed.
"In last 20 years, I have yet to come across a similar incident," an inspector of Juna Rajwada police station said.
He said the thief had not only expressed regrets for stealing the articles but has also assured that he will return the items after five years.
Police will probe whether this was an act by a student in need, the police officer said.
