THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An unidentified gang of assailants grievously injured a Congress leader, Saji Kumar, 47, Sanal Bhavan, Piriyakodu, Ooruttabalam, and hacked his man parts at his house near Ooruttamblam on Thursday night. The victim, who was also a KSRTC employee, had his legs and hands broken. Saji Kumar was the Maranalloor mandalam committee general secretary of the Congress party.
According to the Maranalloor police, a six-member gang which included his neighbours, first broke the electricity meter box in the house. Saji Kumar who heard the commotion came out of the building. He was allegedly then beaten with iron rods until his bones broke. His penis was hacked with a machete and it required nine stitches. Some neighbours came to the spot hearing the cries of his elderly parents. He was unmarried and used to live alone with them.
The doctors said that the bones in his shin was broken at multiple places and would take a very long time to heal. He was declared out of danger. Congress workers said that the victim, until Friday afternoon, had no family members to take care of him. Though reports said that two persons were taken into custody, Maranalloor police claimed that they were yet to make a breakthrough. “Prima facia, the attack was not politically motivated. We hope to arrest some of the accused soon,” police officials said.
