Chennai: Driver waylaid by gang on bypass stretch
Chennai: Police have launched a hunt for miscreants who waylaid a driver and robbed his smartphone and cash on the Tambaram Maduravoyal bypass near Ambattur estate on Thursday.
Senthamizh Selvan (23), a resident of Kamarajar Nagar in Avadi, is employed as a driver at a private nursing institute in Puzhal, police said.
On Thursday, he was returning to the college during the wee hours when he was robbed, police said. “He was returning from the airport after dropping the college chairman,” a police official said.
Around 4 am, a gang on three bikes intercepted his car and made him get out of the vehicle. The gang then decamped with his smartphone and cash he was carrying after assaulting him. Ambattur estate police have registered a case and have begun investigations.
Police sources said that instances of labourers and drivers being robbed along the highway has increased and cops are increasing the vigil on these stretches.
