Low Neet mark: Salem youth commits suicide

The boy’s parents on returning from work knocked at the door for a long time and there was no response.

Salem: A medical college aspirant committed suicide by hanging in his house at Vellandivalasu area in Edappadi near Salem, after having scored low marks in the recent Neet, despite scoring high marks in his Plus-2 Board exam.

Police said on Saturday that the youth Barathipriyan, son of one Settu, tailor by profession, was saddened over his inability to join a government medical college this academic year as his ‘Neet score’ was just 111, while he totaled 425 in Plus-2.

Barathipriyan had tried to enquire whether admission in a private medical college here was possible, but was allegedly told he would need to pay Rs 30 lakh for getting admission.

The youth’s father Settu advised his son that as it would not be possible for him to join a government medical college this year, where there would no demand for capitation fee or having to pay high tuition fees, Barathipriyan should pursue some other course for a year, retake Neet the next year to join a medical college.

But disheartened by this delaying prospect, Barathipriyan after his parents had gone out for work, locked the house door from inside and hung himself to death, police said.

The boy’s parents on returning from work knocked at the door for a long time and there was no response. Then with help of relatives when they broke open the door, they were shocked to find Barathipriyan hanging. The mortal remains of the poor boy was later buried in a local cemetery.

Inquiries with the boy’s parents and elder sister revealed that he was feeling very depressed over not being able to join medical college this year, which pushed him to take this extreme step.
