Goldsmith dies while chasing robbers: Two more arrested in Chennai

Two more accused are still at large, say cops.

Chennai: Two weeks after four persons were arrested for snatching a bag containing 500 grams of gold from Tiruchy-based goldsmith Rangarajan, who died in a bid to chase the snatchers, Vepery police arrested two more persons on Thursday night.

The arrested persons were identified as Noor Mohammed (31) of Angalamman Koil Street in Choolai and John Arul Peter (34) of Madurai. According to police, John Arul Peter was one who waylaid the deceased Rangarajan on EVK Sampath Road in Vepery close to the city police commissioner’s office on May 25.

Noor Mohammed was with other accused who snatched the bag. Sixty eight year-old Rangarajan died when he tried to chase the robbers. “He lost control of the vehicle after hitting a speed breaker opposite the commissioner’s office and died,” police said.

Meanwhile, Vepery police had already arrested D. Rajkumar alias Mambattiyan (32), L. Mahendrakumar (35), P. Ananth (23) and I. Siddique (28). “Based on the information given by the arrested persons, Noor Mohammed and John Arul Peter were arrested,” police added. Although police seized 2 two-wheelers and 30 grams of gold from the first arrest, they only managed to seize a two-wheeler used by John Arul Peter on Thursday. “Two more accused are still at large. Once they are arrested, the stolen property will be seized from them,” police said.

Police initially thought it was an accident and Anna Square traffic investigation police registered a case. However, after Rangarajan’s son Srinivasan informed police that Rangarajan's bag was missing, police found out that it was snatched by unidentified persons and Vepery police registered a case.
