Tunnel to a fortune: Miscreants loot jewellery shop in Bengaluru

The incident took place in Balaji Jewellers on Devasandra Main Road in K.R. Puram police station limits.

Bengaluru: Unidentified miscreants made away with jewels worth over Rs 40 lakh from a jewellery shop by entering the shop premises after digging a tunnel from a storm water drain.

The incident took place in Balaji Jewellers on Devasandra Main Road in K.R. Puram police station limits. Police said the owner of the shop, Mohan Lal, had closed the shop on Wednesday night and gone home. The incident came to light, when he opened the shop around 10 am on Thursday.

“There is a storm water drain that passes next to the shop. The miscreants had opened a slab and dug a tunnel into the shop through the drain. They entered the shop by opening its flooring. The tunnel was about 6-7 feet long and one person could easily pass through it. They have decamped with gold and silver articles worth around Rs 40 lakh. When the police examined the tunnel, it was found that the miscreants had left a few kgs of silver articles in the tunnel before escaping. We are analysing CCTV footage to identify the accused,” the police said.

K. R. Puram police have registered a case. A similar incident was reported in K. R. Puram police station limits in April 2014. Miscreants had entered Kairali Jewellers near Holy Family church on Ramamurthynagar Main Road by entering the shop after digging a tunnel of about 5 feet from a storm water drain next to the shop and had escaped with valuables worth Rs 35 lakh.
