Hyderabad: 5 held for robbery, claiming to be cops

Police said the gang was addicted to bad habits and were unemployed and decided to earn money through crime.

Hyderabad: Gopalapuram police arrested a notorious five-member gang on Monday for dacoity and for posing as police officials and looting the public and recovered gold ornaments weighing around 10 grams, a cell phone and Rs 3,000 from them.

The arrested men are Benedict Sanjeev, 20, Kaki Kalyan Kumar, 20, Vanguri Sunil, 20, Lanka Akhil Mudiraj, 20, and Alexander Mario Jack, 20. Police said the gang was addicted to bad habits and were unemployed and decided to earn money through crime.

“On December 25 the gang stole a wallet containing Rs 18,500 and ATM card from one Ammiraju of Mettuguda during the wee hours while he was walking near Chilkalguda X Roads by assaulting him and withdrew Rs 14,500 from an ATM,” the police said.

On May 1, at about 4 pm while P. Ramesh, 28, a private sector employee from Malkajgiri, was getting down from a bus at Jubilee Bus Station and was walking towards Uppal bus stop. Near Garden Hotel Benedict Sanjeev, Lanka Raj and Mario Jack intercepted him on a motorcycle posing as police officers.

“Mario got down from the bike while the other two forcibly made him sit on their bike, took him to an isolated place near New Bhoiguda and snatched his gold chain weighing about 10 grams and a cell phone and decamped with the booty,” said North Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police B. Sumathi.

Based on a tip off on Monday at about 6 pm the gang was arrested at New Bhoiguda and they confessed to the above offences, police said. The stolen property, including the vehicles used, were recovered. The culprits will be produced in court
