Hyderabad: Dead man's kin allege torture

The cops are denying the charges and have directed the family to lodge a complaint so that a probe can be launched.

Hyderabad: Relatives of a 34-year-old individual who died while undergoing treatment on Saturday have alleged that he died of injuries suffered during a police interrogation connected to a theft case.

The cops are denying the charges and have directed the family to lodge a complaint so that a probe can be launched.

Masti Swamy, of Bangla Venkatapur village of Gajwel, was summoned by Thoguta police in March in connection with a theft at his employer’s house. Cash worth Rs 1.8 lakh was reported stolen. But after a round of questioning, Swamy was let off.

Four days ago, Swami was admitted to the Gajwel Government hospital after falling ill and later, was shifted to the Gandhi hospital at Secunderabad. He died on Saturday.

Members of his family are now alleging that he was tortured by police during the interrogation and have demanded compensation. They are yet to lodge a formal complaint in the matter.

Thoguta inspector Som Narayana Singh maintained that the police department was not responsible for Swami’s death and said he was let off after the questioning.
