Bhubaneswar: Man kills sister for good luck

The accused Tripura Mallick used to practice black magic since long with a belief that it would fetch him good luck.

Bhubaneswar: In a macabre act, a 40-year-old man on Wednesday killed his widowed sister in front of the statue of Goddess Dakshin Kaali at Dangahat village under Sadar Police station in Odisha’s Bolangir district, nearly 350 km from here. According to police, the accused Tripura Mallick used to practice black magic since long with a belief that it would fetch him good luck and fortunes. He would tell the villagers that in order to get fortunes early one has to sacrifice a family member before Goddess Kaali.

On Wednesday afternoon when all the family members were taking rest after lunch at their thatched house, Tripura targeted his eldest sister Rangabati, a widow, and hacked her to death with a sword. He then come out of the house and danced on the road, saying he had killed his sister and would kill another four persons for getting huge wealth. “When he said he had killed his sister Rangabati, we did not believe it initially. As we looked for Rangabati in the house after Tripura’s claim of murder, we found her lying on a pool of blood,” said Pramod Sahoo, a villager.

Inspector Ananda Chandra Majhi of Sadar Police station said the accused was arrested in the evening and the offence of weapon seized. “We have arrested the accused and offence of the weapon along with other puja materials has been seized. The man appears to be mentally unsound. However, the forensic team is examining every angles of the murder. The probe is on to ascertain the exact reason of the ghastly killing,” said Mr Majhi.
