Hyderabad: 3 held for posing as reporters

Hyderabad: Three persons were arrested by the Miryalaguda police on Friday for allegedly blackmailing and extorting money from rice mill owners in Miryalaguda by posing as news reporters.

They allegedly extorted money from rice mill owners threatening to write fake news about them. They allegedly extorted money from people in the two Telugu states.

The accused has been identified as R. Nageswara Rao and his two accomplices V. Murali, 40, and M. Rama Ramakrishna, 30.

A. Srinivas, Miryalguda deputy superintendent of police, said, “The accused posed as reporters and recently visited a rice mill at Sagar ring road in Miryalaguda and threatened its owner stating that if he didn’t give money, they will write fake news about the mill. Fearing them the owner gave money.”

The incident came to light when the owner approached local reporters and explained about the extortion. Local reporters in turn approached the police and lodged a complaint. The cops registered as case under Section 420 and 384 IPC and further investigated the case.

Ch. Sada Nagaraju Miryalaguda town-1 inspector said, “With CCTV cameras installed in the town as a part of Nenu Saitham initiative, we were successful in identifying the accused and nabbed them in Khammam. With his help, we successfully zeroed in on the location of his aides and nabbed them too.”

The trio confessed their crime and the police have sent them to judicial remand.
