Hyderabad: A man died after the banned Chinese manja slit his throat when he was riding a two-wheeler in Mancherial on Friday.
The deceased, Bhimaiah, a native of Gollapalli in Jagtial district, was driving on the old Mancherial National Highway with his wife riding pillion. The manja got entangled around his throat and slit it leading to his death. His wife was also injured in the incident. Bhimaiah’s body was shifted to a local hospital for post-mortem examination. The police registered a case over the incident.
Meanwhile, on the same day in Hyderabad, a man escaped with only a minor injury to his throat when it was cut by manja. D. Vinod Kumar, 40, was riding a two-wheeler from Gachibowli to Mehdipatnam. On Tolichowki bridge, when he was going at a speed of 40-45 kmph, he felt something entangled around his throat. He stopped the bike and found the manja had caused an injury.
“I continued to ride, but realised after some time that I was profusely bleeding from the injury and my throat was covered with blood. I then went to a private hospital and had to get four stitches to close the wound,” Vinod said.
The State government had banned the use of Chinese manja, or synthetic nylon thread, to fly kites in 2016. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) too had passed an order on its ban, but it continues to be available in the city before the Sankranti festival. Apart from injuries to humans, a lot of birds are also hurt or killed by the thread every year.
