Bengaluru: The West division police have arrested a 22-year-old gym instructor in connection with the murder of a delivery boy of an e-commerce firm. He reportedly committed the crime to steal a mobile phone from him, which he had ordered online. The accused, Varun Kumar, a resident of Mudalapalya, had joined the gym only a week ago as instructor and ordered for a mobile phone online with Flipkart, worth Rs 12,900, the police said.

According to the police, Varun had pestered his father to buy him the phone, but his father had refused, asking him to buy the phone with his own money when his salary comes. When the delivery boy Nanjundaswamy, 28, came with the consignment on December 9, Varun told him to wait at the Allahabad Bank parking lot in Vijaynagar.

There he initially attacked Nanjundaswamy with a blunt object, the police suspect it was a flower vase, then bludgeoned him with an iron road and stabbed him with a knife. He later dumped the body in a cement mixer at the cellar of the building. Varun took two mobile phone handsets and Rs 10,000 in cash from the victim and escaped.

The Vijaynagar police who took up investigation tracked down Varun through the last call that was made from Nanjundaswamy’s phone to him. A detailed questioning led Varun to confess to the crime and the police arrested him on Tuesday. The police have also recovered the mobile phones and cash from the accused, produced him before a magistrate and remanded him to judicial custody.
