Hyderabad: An Indian Army official posted in one of its units at Secunderabad became a victim of cyber fraud and lost over Rs 1 lakh.
The official had ordered some products from an e-commerce platform, but as it was not delivered, he searched on the website to reach out to the customer care of the platform. He found a customer care number in Google and contacted the number.
He was then directed to Avval support desk in his mobile phone and shared his UPI id. Later, he was told to give the UPI pin in the application on his mobile.
As he entered the UPI pin, he received multiple bank transaction messages indicating the amount debited from his account. He realised he was trapped and lodged a complaint with Hyderabad's Cybercrime wing. He said that Rs 1.10 lakh was siphoned off from his account.
A case has been registered in this regard and the investigation is underway, said the police.
Police advised that while searching for customer care numbers, users should not search for them on Google, rather go to the product or e-commerce platform’s website or mobile app and register their grievances, so that they are addressed and most importantly users are not duped.
