Hyderabad: Fifty women carried out namaaz on Thursday at Ujale Shah Eidgah in Sayeedabad for the reconstruction of the Babri Masjid at the same place in Ayodhya. Both men and women gathered in numbers to offer Asar prayers in protest against the Supreme Court verdict.

Sayeedabad police station refused permission on the grounds that no protests were allowed.

Namaaz is offered at Eidgah during Urs celebrations and Eid. On Thursday the permission became a bone of contention as police felt it could cause trouble.

A large police contingent surrounded the Eidgah and after consultations agreed that only women would pray.

The women in a joint statement said that the Babri masjid was not only of the mosque but that of the community’s faith and identity. They said that once there is a masjid there can only be another masjid.

For them their claim to Babri masjid will always remain the same and not change whatever the Supreme Court verdict.

The women said they had gathered to pray and boost their morale to rebuild the Babri masjid and punish those who demolished it.

After the prayers they dispersed peacefully but police vigil continued till late evening.
