Bengaluru: BMTC bus snuffs out life of 19-year-old girl

Bengaluru: A 19-year-old girl died on the spot after she was run over by a BMTC bus in Sunkadkatte under Kamakshipalaya police limits on Sunday evening. The deceased, Mamata, was riding the pillion on her brother’s bike when the accident occurred, the police said. Mamata was a second year B. Pharm student studying at the KLE College in Navarang the police said.

Mamata and her brother Mahadev had gone to a relative’s house on Magadi Road near Sunkadkatte and were returning home in RPC Layout in Vijayanagar. Around 6 pm, a BMTC bus (route no. 248 from Depot-9) coming from Jalahalli Cross going towards City Market side bumped into their bike from the rear near Sunkadkatte, on Magadi Road opposite Lakshmi Multispecialty Hospital. While Mahadev fell with the bike to the left, Mamata fell on the right, coming under the wheels of the bus, the police said.

She was wearing a helmet, but she sustained fatal injuries as the front wheel of the bus ran over her killing her on the spot. Mahadev sustained minor injuries. The passersby then informed the police, who rushed to the spot, arrested the BMTC driver, Shekarappa (35), and seized the bus.

Mahadev informed his family members and they were inconsolable. Victim’s body was shifted to Victoria Hospital for the postmortem. Kamakshipalaya traffic police have registered a case of accidental death due to rash and negligent driving and further investigations are underway.
