Hyderabad: Accident caused by drunk pal costs youth his kidney

Police said all of them were aged below 18 and drunk.

Hyderabad: An Intermediate student suffered severe injuries while pillion-riding on a motorcycle that was being ridden by a reportedly drunk rider after a birthday party, police said.

G. Revanth was admitted to the Apollo Hospitals at Jubilee Hills, where doctors performed a surgery on his and removed his right kidney and spleen. Hospital officials said his condition was critical.

Police said Revanth, a resident of Kothapet, along with his friend Nawaz and seven others went to Necklace Road to celebrate the birthday of one of their friends. After cutting the cake at midnight, they consumed alcohol and set off on a joy ride.

Police said all of them were aged below 18 and drunk. Nawaz was riding the bike, TS 08EF 2564, while Revanth was on the pillion. Nawaz lost control on the bike and crashed into a road divider and Revanth sustained severe injuries.

“He was rushed to hospital by his other friends. His ribs fractured and pierced into the right kidney,” Banjara Hills ACP S. Udaykumar Reddy said.

Hospital authorities said that Revanth’s condition was haemodynamically stable. “He is still on implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and has temperature. His spleen and kidney were removed due to injury and his condition is still critical,” the hospital said.

Based on a complaint from Revanth’s father Subhash Chandrabose, Banjara Hills police registered a case of causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life and under provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Police is looking for Nawaz and others. Police records show that the bike was registered on the name of one Shaheen Begum; it had pending challans for the rider not wearing a helmet.
