Bribes must at Bhuvanagiri sub-jail in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: The TS prison department received negative feedback from released prisoners through a third-party agency on jail conditions.
Mr S. Kishore, who was lodged at the Bhuvanagiri sub-jail from July 18, 2016, to August 25 in a drug peddling case, stated in his feedback (on September 3) that jail staffers and superintendent used to demand money (Rs 100 to Rs 200) for allowing meetings between prisoners and their families.
He also informed the third-party agency that smoking was allowed inside the prison. “Those who give Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 will not be asked to work in the barracks,” he said.
On September 6, the prisons’ DG ordered a probe into the matter and appointed RR district prisons’ DSP Dasharatharam as inquiry officer.
On September 9, another ex-prisoner, a government teacher, made some allegations about Bhuvanagiri jail staff. He was lodged in the jail for five days in a cheque bounce case. He said that when he was in jail he had deposited Rs 500 and the officials did not return it at the time of his release.
“The staff demand money from prisoners and families. I faced a similar experience with the Bhuvanagiri police. My gold rings were deposited with the police during my arrest but they did not return it,” he informed the agency.
