Over 70 sim cards, gold, Rs 30,000 seized from con man
Chennai: A con man was arrested in Mangadu on Tuesday after he was found with over 70 sim cards and gold. It was later found that the man had been conning women for over eight years and police had been on a lookout for him.
Murugan(58) would post advertisements in a Tamil newspaper seeking either a divorced or widowed woman, stating that he was a businessman making over Rs 50,000 and did not prefer any caste or creed. He would then go on to marry the woman at a temple nearby and run away with all the gold in her possession.
The incident only came to light after Nirmala from Hosur lodged a complaint with the Tambaram police station after Murugan fled with her 4 sovereign chain and Rs 10,000. He had taken the gold and cash from her promising to make the necessary arrangements to marry her, she had said in her complaint. The Tambaram police today spotted Murugan waiting on Thiruneermazhai road in Burma Colony. Although they did not recognise him, they took him to the police station to inquire as he had over 70 sim cards on his person along with the ads that he had been posting in the newspaper. Murugan then confessed to the crimes and said that it was he who had conned Nirmala. The police then searched his house and seized 18 sovereign gold, Rs 30,000 and two cell phones. Police sources say that Murugan confessed to have conned 10 to 12 women.
