Bengaluru: Dangling cable claims man's life

The deceased, Gopal Rao, was crossing the median when a low hanging cable wire passing between the trees got stuck in his neck.

Bengaluru: In a freak accident, a 44-year-old man died after he was run over by a car on the busy Double Road in Wilson Garden traffic police limits on Sunday.

The deceased, Gopal Rao, was crossing the median when a low hanging cable wire passing between the trees got stuck in his neck. He he lost his balance and fell on the road. Before he could react, a car driven by Gayathri ran over Gopal, leaving him dead on the spot. Wilson Garden traffic police have arrested the accused driver.

Members of the Shanthinagar Residents’ Welfare Association blamed dangling cables for Gopal’s death. They said that despite their repeated complaints to BBMP officials and cable companies, the wires continue to dangle low on the stretch putting the pedestrians at risk. BBMP officials cut most of the cables after the accident, they said.

Recalling a similar incident a few metres away from the accident spot, one of the SRWA members said that a woman died four years ago because of a low hanging wire. “Second death in the same area is an example that we have never learnt a lesson,” he said.
