Bengaluru: Chained to debt, techpreneur takes to snatching, arrested

Involved in 20 cases, Left job in an IT firm to start business, incurred losses.

Bengaluru: Unable to bear with huge losses in business, a techie-turned-entrepreneur took to robbery and became a notorious chain snatcher. He committed over 20 thefts before landing in police net after giving a hot chase to the HSR Layout police.

The accused, Prabhakar (40), a resident of Parappana Agrahara and hailing from Andhra Pradesh, was reportedly a bright techie employed in an IT company in the city.

He later decided to become an entrepreneur but incurred debts. He then took to crime and chain snatching to pay them off.

Prabhakar used to live with his wife and two children in a rented house in Parappana Agrahara. A few years ago he left his job to pursue his dream of becoming an entrepreneur.

He started his own offset printing press which supplied billboards and interiors to tech companies. Eventually, he incurred huge losses, forcing him to close down the business.

With no other source of income, Prabhakar took to robbery. He began snatching chains from elderly women on his motorbike. He got arrested after robbing 20 women.

According to police, the accused used to pawn stolen valuables in gold loan companies and had already repaid Rs 10 lakh loan in a span of six months.

How he was arrested?
On Friday night, while Prabhakar was returning home after a robbery, he was confronted the HSR Layout police patrol. On seeing police Prabhakar took a turn and tried to escape. The police grew suspicious and started chasing him. In the melee Prabhakar rammed his motorcycle on to a divider and fell off.

Head constable Mallappa and his colleague detained Prabhakar and took him to the hospital from where he was taken into custody for further investigations.
During interrogation, Prabhakar confessed to committing a robbery and also revealed about previous robberies in different parts of the city.
