Tamil Nadu: Man held for Rs 7.5 crore cheating

The deal' was for Rs 15 crore to get back the government recognition for the college, which was blacklisted in the year 2014.

Chennai: Kancheepuram police have arrested a 48-year-old man from Gujarat for allegedly cheating an owner of a blacklisted private medical college to the tune of Rs 7.5 crore by promising to remove the college's name from the blacklist.

The arrested was identified as Yogesh Kumar Gupta, a resident of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, who reportedly convinced Murugesan, the owner of Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Medical College on East Coast Road in Manmainallur village by saying that he got contacts. The ‘deal’ was for Rs 15 crore to get back the government recognition for the college, which was blacklisted in the year 2014. But Yogesh Kumar Gupta demanded a 50 per cent payment initially and the rest after the college name was removed from the blacklist.

Murugesan reportedly gave Rs 7.5 crore in five instalments to Gupta, who stopped entertaining his calls after that. Gupta later started threatening Murugesan saying that he would have an income tax raid at latter’s house to unearth black money. Murugesan approached the Kancheepuram SP, who initiated a probe by district crime branch and Gupta was nabbed.
