Chennai: With government railway police and Kancheepuram district police shrugging off the responsibility of filing a case regarding the mugging and robbing of a software engineer, the railway protection force formed a special team and nabbed a gang of five on Wednesday evening.
The victim, Santhosh Kumar (32) of Vandalur, is a software engineer in an IT firm in Mahindra City near Chengalpattu. He was attacked with a knife on Saturday night near Vandalur railway station and robbed of his gold chain, mobile phone and cash. As the incident happened near railway ground, the Vandalur Otteri police refused to file a case until Sundayevening. The Tambaram railway police also refused to file a case citing jurisdictional issues.
Meanwhile, RPF, who has no power to file FIR and arrest the accused, had formed a special team to nab the accused. “A gang was held in Guduvancherry railway station on suspicion and interrogated. While checking them, a knife and four mobile phones were found. They were taken to RPF police station and questioned,” an RPF source said.
During the investigation, the gang reportedly confessed to attacking Santhosh Kumar and said that they were indulging in burglary, chain snatching in the locality. The RPF police also handed the gang of three transgenders, a juvenile and 27-year-old Madan alias Gurumurthy to the Vandalur Otteri police. They were taken custody by the Otteri police and further investigation is on.
