Police, family differ on cause of SI Gopalakrishna’s death

Family members of Gopalakrishna have condemned statements that he had committed suicide unable to bear the stress of police duty

KAKINADA: Sub-inspector of police M. Gopalakrishna of Sarpavaram police station in Kakinada district, who died after he shot himself, was cremated on Sunday with state honours at Nawabpeta in Jaggayyapeta mandal of NTR district.

Kakinada traffic DSP P. Muralikrishna Reddy led the team that presented the guard of honour and saluted the departed officer.

Family members of Gopalakrishna have condemned statements that he had committed suicide unable to bear the stress of police duty. Muralikrishna, a cousin of the deceased, maintained that Gopalakrishna had not been a weak person who would commit suicide. In fact, though he did his MCA, he chose to be a police officer. Therefore, in all probability, the pistol may have misfired, leading to his death, Muralikrishna remarked.

However, higher police officials had on Friday stated that Gopalakrishna may not have been able to cope with the stress an officer goes through. In a moment of impulse, he may have ended his life.

Investigating officer M. Venkateswara Rao refused to speculate on the matter. He maintained that they are probing the death from all angles. He will be submitting his report after a thorough inquiry.

Deceased Gopalakrishna’s father M. Srinivasa Rao maintained that his son had no financial or family problems. “There is no truth in different views being circulated on my son’s death. I am confident the police investigation will reveal the facts of death,” he stated.
