Hyderabad: A shocking case of intimidation of a 17-year-old girl student and her family by the parents of the boy who made her pregnant, shows how much in the dark ages relationships still are in our country.
The girl was in a relationship with a boy from the same college and they fell in love with each other and in due course of time, they entered into a physical relationship.
The girl became pregnant, but apparently was not aware of it. On the evening of February 14, she complained of pain in the stomach and swollen legs, and her parents took her to a nearby private hospital from where she was referred to Gandhi Hospital where she delivered a baby girl.
When the girl's parents came to know the identity of the boy who had made their daughter pregnant, they summoned his parents. The two families were discussing what to do when local leaders from Alwal, where the boy lives, intervened and stopped the girl's parents from approaching the police and threatened them of dire consequences if they lodged a police complaint.
The girl and the boy were forced to sign an agreement which stated that the new-born child will be given in adoption to the girl's paternal aunt.
“Later, they were forced to hand over the child to a children's home in Mehdipatnam. They (the girl's parents) were also made to stay away from the police by assuring them that the girl will be married to the boy after she turns 18,” a distant relative of the girl said.
The girl and her family are living in fear of the boy's family and a close watch is being kept on them; when the girl would go for her exams to a centre in Alwal, she was always followed.
According to sources, the girl and the boy completed their final examinations on Tuesday. The girl has been provided no post- delivery treatment or other health checks that should have been mandatory given her young age.
