Tamil Nadu: Police bury Dalit youth's body late Monday night

Kin demanded that the body should be cremated on Wednesday morning after the last rites are over.

Tirupur: The relatives of the Dalit youth, Shankar, who was murdered in Udumalpet, went on a rampage damaging electric lights and generators at the crematorium and did not allow the funeral to be conducted on Monday evening.

However, the police, after lathicharging protesters when they were attempting to move the body to Shankar’s home, buried the body late on Monday night in his father’s presence.

Shankar’s body was first brought to his native village of Komaralingam on Monday night amid tight security by the police who had made arrangements for generator, lights and firewood at the crematorium for cremating the body. Shankar’s kin who had gathered at the spot refused to allow the cremation.

Kin demanded that the body should be cremated on Wednesday morning after the last rites are over. Heated arguments broke out when the police refused to accept their demand. Once the kin agreed to take the body home without protests, the police tried to move Shankar’s remains but were met by irate protesters on the road. Using force to disperse them, the police buried the body with the permission of Shankar’s father.
