Hyderabad: Child worker rescued from ex-MLA's house

The girl, hailing from Mahbubnagar, was working at Reddy's house since 18 months.

Hyderabad: A 13-year-old girl who was working at the house of former Assembly deputy speaker Koppula Harishwar Reddy was rescued on Monday, officials said. The girl, hailing from Mahbubnagar, was working at Reddy’s house since 18 months.

A case was registered against Harishwar Reddy and a fine of Rs 20,000 was imposed on him. A 14-year-old boy who was working in the canteen of the MLA quarters here was also rescued on Monday.

AP Balahakkula Sang-ham, an NGO, and officials from the child welfare department jointly conducted the raids at the residence of Reddy at quarter 202 in Old MLA Quarters.

The girl from Penumalle village, was was made to do domestic work. A case against Harishwar Reddy was registered under Section 14 of the Child Labour Act and a fine of '20,000 was imposed on him.

“We are checking how much the girl was paid,” said Mr Gangadhar, of the child welfare department.

The boy who was working at the MLAs’ canteen hailed from Ibrahimp-atnam.
Sources said three minors were working in the canteen, but when the raid team reached the spot, the contractor and two boys fled. Both the girl and the boy were shifted to rescue homes.
