Chennai: Two held for spate of mobile snatchings

The arrested person was identified as Nanda Mathur, (30), of Jharkhand, who had migrated to the city to find a job.

Chennai: A 19-year-old college dropout and a-30-year-old migrant labourer were nabbed in separate string of mobile snatching incidents reported on Sunday.

Four persons were lucky to get their mobiles back immediately while the cops were probing to locate two more mobile phones, which could have been sent to the underground network that deals in stolen phone in the city.

Luck ran out for the suspect Ragupathi, 19, resident of Royapettah, when he snatched a mobile from autorickshaw driver Kadir (35) at Marina Beach. The resident of Villivakkam was waiting for passengers on the service lane when the suspect managed to snatch two mobiles from beach goers before he was caught. All three mobile phones, including Kadir’s, were recovered from his possession. He was handed over to Anna Square Police and was being remanded to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the mobile of N. Manikandan, 20, of Devaraj Mudali street, was snatched by a duo that came in a bike as he was walking along the Zam Bazaar, at around 3.45 pm. Though the rider managed to give a slip, the locals managed to grab the pillion rider who was handed over to the Zam Bazaar Police station after a sound thrashing. The arrested person was identified as Nanda Mathur, (30), of Jharkhand, who had migrated to the city to find a job. Efforts are on to locate his accomplice.

Two similar incidents were reported in New Washermenpet Police station jurisdiction on Sunday night. In one, Madras High Court advocate M. Kalaiarasan, 35, of Karumari Amman Nagar, New Washermanpet, lost his mobile to a duo when he was walking along T.H.Road near Apollo Hospital at around 9.30 pm. He was returning from a movie when the incident took place.

Similarly, V. Anil Sharma, (25), of Veeraraghavan Road, New Washermanpet, who runs a cell phone servicing centre, lost a customer’s mobile phone near MPT Quarters, at around 8.30 pm. Cases were registered in all the instances.
