CCTV footage helps identify killers, says Udumalpet DSP

The third goon leaves the spot after identifying the targets.

Coimbatore: When the spine-chilling honour killing unfolded at a crowed bus stop in Udumalpet, quietly one camera was capturing the shocking scenes. It was the CCTV camera fixed to a private commercial complex near the bus stand.

The video footage of the honour killing was circulated on WhatsApp, triggering statewide outrage against casteist killings in Tamil Nadu. “The video footage of the murder was recorded in the CCTV camera of a nearby commercial complex. But we don’t know who circulated it on WhatsApp,” said the Udumalpet DSP, M. Vivekanandan.

The video footage shows how the killers, obviously paid henchmen, carry out the murder in a cool, heinous manner, like a butcher chopping goats for mutton. The WhatsApp opens with Shankar and his wife heading towards the main road from a private commercial complex. Two men follow them. Meanwhile, another guy runs behind the two and helps them identify Shankar and Kousalya from behind. The third goon leaves the spot after identifying the targets.

Then the other two goons first attack Kousalya and then push both of them behind a parked car on the roadside. The panic-gripped public runs helter skelter. One of them raises an alarm and runs to stop the accused. But as they wield sickles, he gives up.

Meanwhile, another accused arrives at the spot on a bike. The two killers pile on to the bike and make a cool escape as public watch in shock.

“We expect the public who saw the murder to depose as witness in the case,” said the DSP.
