BSF commandant has nexus with smuggler: CBI
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CBI informed the special court here on Wednesday that Border Security Force commandant Jibu T. Mathew, held recently with Rs 47 lakh, was suspected to be having a nexus with a notorious smuggler of Indo-Bangla border Bushu Sheik.
According to sources, the CBI was also planning to make Sheik an accused in the case.
It was during arguments on a bail plea filed by Mr Mathew that the premier investigating agency informed the CBI court about this. The CBI counsel had also said that Sheik was wanted by central agencies like the National Investigation Agency, said sources
The court is likely to give a verdict on the bail application on Thursday. Meanwhile, sources said the CBI had so far invoked only corruption charges against Mr Mathew even though it had accused him of indulging in anti-national activities.
Hailing from Pathanamthitta, he was serving as BSF 83rd battalion commandant at the South Bengal frontier near Murshidabad.
He was held from Shalimar Express train from Alappuzha about two weeks back with Rs 47 lakh. CBI's case is that he had received the cash for facilitating the smuggling of fake currencies and drugs as well as human trafficking.
