Wheelchair-bound woman held with 4 kg gold at KIA

Officials of the Customs Department said that the woman had come by Emirates EK-568 flight from Dubai.

Bengaluru: The officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs Department have arrested a 52-year-old wheelchair bound woman, who was allegedly trying to smuggle 38 gold biscuits, weighing 4.432 kg and worth over Rs 1.27 crore, at the Kempegowda International Airport on Sunday. The woman has been identified as Kunduru Thulasamma, hailing from Andhra Pradesh.

Officials of the Customs Department said that the woman had come by Emirates EK-568 flight from Dubai. Based on a tip off she was detained. She was using a wheelchair, but it was found that she had no physical problem and it was not required.

A thorough frisking revealed that she had concealed gold biscuits in a cotton bag tied around her stomach.

“There were 38 gold biscuits, each weighing 10 tolas. She has been arrested and remanded in our custody till February 29,” an official said.
