Hyderabad: CCTV, Google Maps help cops nab hit-and-run driver

The locals immediately rushed him to Gandhi Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment on the same day.

Hyderabad: CCTV footage and Google Maps came in handy for the Malkajgiri police to arrest a man in a hit-and-run case 11 days after the incident. The accused, L. Jayaprakash, was arrested for driving his car in a negligent manner and causing the death of a 72-year-old who was riding a bike, said police.

Malkajgiri inspector A. Man Mohan said that at about 5.30 pm on January 3, one Kona Ramchander Rao, was heading back home after work. When his bike reached the gate of RPF Seventh Battalion at Old Safilguda, a speeding car rammed his bike from the rear resulting in Ramchander falling off the vehicle.

The locals immediately rushed him to Gandhi Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment on the same day.

“Soon after the incident, a case was registered. Initially, there were no clues. On subsequent verification of CCTV footage and on enhancing the images with the tools available, the vehicle was identified. Further, we have also taken the support of Google Maps in fixing the accused Lologu Jayaprakash, 32, a businessman from Old Safilguda,” police said.

He said, “The accused initially denied taking the route where the accident took place. But, using Google Maps, the route travelled by him was found and then he confessed to committing the offence.”
