Police said the gangster, identified as Muralidharan (25), was involved in over 50 robberies and had on December 3 killed a cab driver.

A senior police official said they received a tip off that Muralidharan was seen riding a scooter on Kattalipalya Main Road.

When a police team went to arrest the gangster, he attacked Head Constable Vijay Kumar with a knife in a bid to escape.

Inspector Ramesh then opened fire in the air to warn him to surrender and later shot him in his left leg to stop him.
