Odisha: Constable falls victim to blind belief
Berhampur: A constable of Pasara outpost under Chakapada police limits in Odisha’s Kandhamal district has been tonsured and allegedly made to eat human excreta by another constable of India Reserve Battalion (IRB) here in Phulbani district officials over suspicion of practicing sorcery, reports said on Wednesday. The victim, Goura Chandra Kanhar, is reportedly a resident of Bidangi Sahi under Phulbani Town police limits.
As per the allegations, some days ago the accused Purna Chandra Kanhar had threatened Goura through a phone call to kill him. Later, during a discussion at the street mandap, Purna along with Amarendra Kanhar and other associates dragged the victim and took him along. The constable further alleged that he was tonsured by them and later forced to eat faeces. Though no case has been registered against the accused, the police has detained all of them and are interrogating them on the issue.
“Purna Chandra had threatened to kill me thinking that I am behind his sister’s illness. I am not involved in any sorcery. They dragged me from the committee meeting, tonsured and forced me to eat faeces,” said Goura. Local Phulbani Town Police station inspector Rebati Sabar said Amarendra along with his associates on Sunday night tonsured Goura and forced him to eat faeces. He was kept detained in a room whole night. They had planned to take him to a temple on Monday morning.
“However, police rescued Goura from their shackles soon after getting information,” she added. As per sources, Amarendra’s sister saw Goura in her dreams following which she was taken ill. Citing Goura’s involvement behind the illness of his sister, Amarendra tortured our constable, added the inspector Ms Sabar.
