Mayurappa told Deccan Chronicle, “We have already 3 sons and 3 daughters''.

Krishnagiri: A poor woman landed in police custody for selling her newborn girl for Rs 200. On Tuesday, 25-yea- old Asha worker P.Geetha of Vanamangalam village near Thally, 27 km from Hosur of Krishnagiri alerted the officials after she found the mother in the home but the newborn baby missing.

District police took custody of 40-year-old M.Thimakka and her 45-year-old husband E.Mayurappa, a farm hand of Vanamangalam. When questioned, they admitted selling their newborn baby for Rs 200, allegedly to 50-year-old N.Ellamma of Basthi in Hosur and a sanitary worker in the Hosur government hospital.

Mayurappa told Deccan Chronicle, “We have already 3 sons and 3 daughters. My wife delivered the seventh child, a girl baby on Thursday in the Hosur government hospital. Without informing hospital staff, she moved out of the hospital on Sunday and came home without the child. She told me that the baby was handed over to hospital staff who gave my wife Rs 200 for bus charges.”

Thimakka said, “We are poor people and find it hard to feed an eight member family. So I was forced to hand over the newborn child to a person who promised to raise her well. I’m told that a family planning operation will weaken me, so I did not undergo the procedure as I have to work as a daily wage worker to support my family,” Thimakka told police.
