Hyderabad: Student beaten by three classmates is battling mental illness

Father of the student says he has spent Rs 8 lakh on treatment and was demanding compensation from the college for neglect.

Hyderabad: Vijay Vardhan Reddy, a first year intermediate student who was studying in Sri Chaitanya junior college, Amberpet had got 98 per cent in Class X and his parents were hoping for a bright future ahead for him. Now he is battling mental illness, a result of being beaten up by his three classmates in college in October in which he got seriously injured on his head.

Vijay’s parents say that he sometimes tries to run away and also acts aggressively at times making it very difficult to control him, as a result of which they have to sometimes tie him up to a bed so that he does not injure himself.

Anji Reddy, the boy's father said, “Just yesterday he tried to jump from the terrace of our house. He tried a few times to run away from house. He is normal for a few hours and then suddenly he starts acting abnormal. He was a calm and sincere kid.” He says that he spent Rs 8 lakhs till now on treatment.

Mr Reddy said, “My demand is that police should take action against the junior college officials so that such incidents do not occur again and that we should get compensation.”

Police arrested the three boys who assaulted Vijay who have been shifted to a correctional home.

Mr Reddy said, “We were informed by junior college officials hours after the incident took place. By the time I reached my son was lying with blood oozing from his head and ears. I took him to two hospitals which denied to admit him and finally he was admitted at a hospital in Hyderguda. The junior college officials are telling everyone that they paid us Rs 10 lakhs as compensation which is false.” He plans to take part in a protest outside the college on Wednesday.

Dr R.T.S. Naik, Consul-tant Neurosurgeon, at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderguda who is treating Vijay said, “Behavioral changes do occur after head injury. His injury was very serious as a blood clot was removed from brain. He recovered from a coma. His treatment is going on and it will be seen if the behavioral change is due to neurological damage or just psychological trauma. In head injury cases long term effect like psychological trauma or loss of memory is common.”
