Salem|Namakkal: A devastating instance of domestic violence stemming from a drunken husband claimed the lives of a 27-year-old young mother and her six-year-old son of Rasipuram area in neighbouring Namakkal district in the early hours of Monday.
Police said the depressed mother, Ms. Hamsa on Sunday night, in an apparent suicide pact, administered an overdose of some ‘toxic substance in tablet form’ to her son Deepak and then consumed the tablets herself and both fell unconscious at their home.
Hamsa's husband Karthik, 31, addicted to liquor every day, has been frequently picking up quarrels with his wife, police said, adding, Karthik was not regularly reporting for work at a welding shop he was employed with in the locality.
After another bout of verbal abuse by her husband on Sunday, a thoroughly dejected Hamsa resorted to this extreme step of administering the toxic substance to her son and then seeking to kill herself by consuming the same, police said.
Coming to know of mother and son lying unconscious, some neighbours rushed the two to the Rasipuram government hospital.
They were later shifted to a private hospital in Salem where both failed to respond to treatment and died early today. Rasipuram police have registered a case and are investigating.
