Hyderabad: A 24-year-old housewife who was abroad returned home and killed herself at her maternal place in Neredmet on Saturday following constant harassment and abuse from her husband in the US.
The deceased was identified as Madhuri, who was married to Koteshwara Rao, 32, in November 2016, police said.
“Soon after their wedding in Hyderabad, they moved to America. She complained to her mother about how her husband used to invite friends at their place during the weekends and forced her to smoke ganja, consume alocohol and gamble with them. If she rejected, he used to harass her. When she could not find a job there, he started harassing her mentally and physically, following which she returned to India in 2017,” said the police inspector of Neredmet, A. Narasimha Swamy.
Later Rao’s in-laws, Venkateswarlu and Subbulu counselled the couple and sent Madhuri back to America.
“When he did not change his behavior, Madhuri returned to Hyderabad on Thursday and on Saturday at about 9 am, she committed suicide by hanging from an iron pipe at her parent’s place in Neredmet,” added the official.
Based on a complaint, cases were booked under Section 498-A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 306 (Abetment of suicide) of IPC and started an investigation.
