Watery grave for University of Hyderabad student
Hyderabad: Akash Sen, 24, a first-year MA sociology student of University of Hyderabad (UoH), drowned at Malabar Kund, a water-filled quarry in the varsity campus on Thursday night.
Akash, a native of Jharkhand, was staying in the campus hostel and had gone to the quarry located near Mushroom Rock, a popular spot for students, with seven friends, including three girls.
They entered into the water for a swim reportedly in an inebriated condition. Once they were caught in the current, they formed a human chain and tried to save each other.
“However, they did not realise that Akash was missing,” said Mr Dharmesh, sub-inspector of Gachibowli, quoting the friends of the victim.
His friends later found and pulled him out of the quarry and waited for an ambulance for over 30 minutes. “The delay in locating him and getting him to the hospital cost his life,” said a classmate.
The students reached the lake at around 7:30 pm and consumed alcohol. They noticed Akash’s absence at around 9 pm. “He was rushed to a private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” said the sub-inspector.
Tirthankar Chakraborty, a friend of Akash, said, “We both did our graduation at Ramkrishna Mission Residential College which had a swimming pool and Akash knew swimming. It must have been the strong currents that led to his death.”
