Chennai: 4 held, two on run in gangrape case
Chennai: Kancheepuram district police on Friday arrested four persons in connection with the gangrape of a 20-year-old woman near Cheyyar in Kancheepuram district, 110 km from the city. The woman filed a complaint with the Anaicut police on Thursday following which police rounded up the men. Two of them are still at large, police said. The woman and her male friend, coworkers at a garment store were alone in a secluded spot in their village on Monday night when a six-member gang rounded up the duo.
All the suspects are known to the victims. They assaulted the man and took turns to rape the woman, police said. On Friday, the Anaicut police arrested Beema Rao (23), Dinesh Kumar (22), Kadhiravan (21) and Dakshinamoorthy (24)- all residents of the Nedumaram village near Koovathur off East Coast Road.
Last Monday, the woman and her friend had met at a secluded spot in their village around 8 pm after work. The gang who had followed them caught them in a compromising position and sent the boy away. Later, they threatened the woman that they would inform about the preceding incidents to her parents. They then held her at knifepoint and raped her, a police officer said.
She approached the cops with her male friend two days later, narrating their ordeal and told the cops that all suspects are from her village. The police registered a case and sent her for medical examination at a hospital. Based on the inputs provided by the victim, police secured four men — all casual labourers. A hunt is on for two others — Dayanidhi and Viji, police said. Of the arrested men, two were arrested earlier for selling arrack, police said. The arrested persons were produced before court and remanded in judicial custody.
