Bengaluru: Jewellery shop staffer held for theft

Police said that for months together Krishnananda succeeded in not arousing anybody's suspicion about his activities.

Bengaluru: In a classic case of overriding greed leading to ruin, a 49-year-old employee of a jewellery shop was arrested after it was found that he was stealing ornaments from the same shop for the past two years.

The accused, Krishnananda Sait, an employee of B. Ram Rao and Sons Jewellers, and a resident of Thyagaraja Nagar, did all this to realize his dream of owning a jewellery shop.

Krishnananda, who employed at the shop for the past seven years, took advantage of the trust reposed on him by his employer Amith Prakash to carry out the crime.

He was in charge of the stock and his modus operandi was as follows: He used to lift chains weighing 20-30 gm and replace it with lighter ones. He used to sell heavier chains to people for a discount or sometimes exchange them to buy other articles.

However, Krishnananda ran out of luck as he was nabbed by the Basavanagudi police, before he could realise his dream of starting a jewellery showroom.

Police said that for months together Krishnananda succeeded in not arousing anybody’s suspicion about his activities. However, one day the owner got to know about disparity in stock and lodged a police complaint.

“Krishnananda, who was the in-charge of the stock, hoodwinked his employer by only showing the number of gold chains and not their weight. He did it for the past two years,” police added. The police recovered 19 gold chains, worth Rs 17.13 lakh, from him. They said that the accused had confessed to stealing the gold chains and also exchanging some with goods at Avenue road.
