Chennai: Teen boy, girl end lives as parents disapprove of their relationship
Chennai: A teenage boy and a girl, said to be in a relationship, committed suicide by intaking poison after their parents disapproved of their relationship, on Monday.
The deceased were identified as S. Ajith alias Pradeep Kumar (19) of Elumichaipatti near Kalpakkam and A. Sowmya (18) of the same village. While the boy was pursuing his carrier in an independent music band, the girl was doing her higher secondary in a nearby school and they were relatives.
According to sources, the boy and girl were in a relationship for some time. “Initially, both the family refused to accept their relationship but later they accepted as the couple threatened to commit suicide,” the police added.
However, the boy’s family allegedly demanded exorbitant dowry that the girl’s family could not give. Due to this, a rift erupted between the families that kept the marriage arrangements on hold. Although Ajith and Sowmiya tried to convince their families, they stood firm in calling off the wedding. Distressed over this, the young couple left their houses on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, both the families lodged missing complaints in the local police station. “On Monday morning locals saw the bodies of the couples at the riverbank of Palar near Thirukazhukundram, alerted the police. The police rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies. They had eaten food with poison and committed suicide,” a source said.
The bodies were sent to Chengalpattu government hospital for post-mortem. Thirukazhukundram police registered a case and are investigating.
