Former DGP denies Nayeem link, says he had secret info'

Mr Reddy said he had sought an appointment with Mr Rao to pass on some 'sensitive information'.

Hyderabad: Former director-general of police V. Dinesh Reddy, now a BJP leader, has strongly denied links with slain gangster Nayeemuddin. He is the third IPS official after Mr D.T. Naik and Mr Tiwari and a host of political leaders, including former Telugu Desam minister A. Uma Madhava Reddy, to have publicly denied links with the gangster.

While praising CM K. Chandrasekhar Rao for giving police the permission to nab the gangster — a step which he said previous governments did not take — Mr Reddy said he had sought an appointment with Mr Rao to pass on some “sensitive information”. “Since a TV channel alleged that an ex-DGP had links with Nayeem, I had to clarify that it wasn’t me. For TRP ratings they cannot tarnish my image. Let the channel name the ex-DGP. The first time I even saw Nayeem was on TV was after the encounter. When I was trying to identify who this joker was, the name cropped up,” he said.

Mr Reddy dismissed accusations all through the press meet which was held at a city hotel. The event was shifted from the BJP office “due to an AC problem.” He said that as DGP he had issued a memo to the then deputy inspector-general of the State Intelligence Bureau to nab Nayeem. “It’s on record,” he said.
