Telangana: Rail cops nab great train robber'

They had recovered property worth Rs 20 lakh that he had stolen by cutting the zipper on passengers' bags on several trains.

Hyderabad: Secunderabad Railway Police on Thursday arrested a man who was involved in at least 13 cases of theft on trains last year. In-charge Railway Superintendent of Police Rajendra Prasad said the offender Harish Kumar Jain hailed from Rajasthan. They had recovered property worth Rs 20 lakh that he had stolen by cutting the zipper on passengers’ bags on several trains.

Jain was previously a cloth merchant, having started the business in Bengaluru in 2003, before shifting to Chennai in 2016. But he had gone into a depression after his mother’s death in 2012 and his business had gone into loss, forcing him to shut down.

He shifted to Vijayawada last year and chose a life of crime to overcome his financial crisis. He targeted passengers on Gautami, Godavari, Konark, Golconda, Satavahana, Howrah Mail and other trains running between Vijayawada and Secunderabad.

In all, he had stolen gold and silver worth Rs 16.6 lakh and laptops, digital cameras and an iPad over the past year. His run ended when Railway police noticed him moving suspiciously at Warangal station on Thursday morning. Police said he confessed to his crimes during inquiry and was sent to remand.
