Kannur: Police has booked 63 people in connection with the twin murders in Payyannur the other day. Cases were registered against 13 for the murder of CPM worker C.V. Dhanaraj and against nearly 50 people suspected to have a role in the BMS leader C.K. Ramachandran's killing.

Raids were conducted in close to 40 violence-prone areas to prevent any untoward incidents after the murders and explosives were seized from Payyanur and Kadirur on Wednesday.

Payyanur CI P. Ramesan and his team will investigate the killing of Mr Dhanaraj while Sreekantapuram CI C.A. Raheem will lead the investigation into the murder of Mr Ramachandran.

Nearly eight cases were registered in connection with the violence after the murder. Some ten houses and several shops and schools were attacked. Meanwhile, the hartal called by auto-rickshaw drivers in Payyanur was peaceful, said the police.

Security was tightened, and strong suspects in both the murders are known to be in custody, though their arrests are yet to be recorded.

Rapid action force, bomb squad and dog squad along with the special investigation team are deployed in Payyanur and nearby areas.
