Chennai: Man killed, 2 hurt as car runs amok
Chennai: A 32-year-old man was crushed to death and two others injured when a car ran amok and hit them in Acharapakkam on Tiruchy- Chennai national highway on Thursday morning. According to passersby, the driver of the car lost control due to over-speeding. The car first hit a barricade on the service road and then hit some passersby. It came to a halt after hitting two pedestrians.
The accident led to the death of a 32-year-old labourer Arul of Acharapakkam. Two others, Lakshmi (26) and the man travelling in the car were injured in the accident. The incident took place at around 6. 45 am.
A resident of the area said, "The incident took place when the speeding car hit the barricades and hit Arul and his wife Lakshmi standing on the service road. Arul died on the spot and Lakshmi was rushed to a government hospital in the city. Locals caught the driver before he could flee from the spot."
On being informed, Acharapakkam police arrived at the spot. Ramalingam (55), a businessman from Ramanathapuram who was travelling in the car also suffered injuries and was sent to a private hospital nearby.
Police said that the front wheel of the car burst and the driver lost control of the wheel. However, some eyewitnesses said that the accident took place because the car was overspeeding.
A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
