Tirupati: In a tragic incident, a pregnant woman pushed her two children into a well and committed suicide, fearing that the child she was carrying was also a girl. A postmortem revealed that the foetus was male. Sarala was six months pregnant.
The victim, Sarala, 29, belonged to Patapalyam in Yadagiri mandal. She had married one Gurunadham, 35, of Payinakandriga about six years back. The couple had two daughters, Jyoshna, 4, and Devisree, 2.
When she became pregnant again, her husband and in-laws began taunting her that she would have a daughter again. Unable to bear their harassment, she ended her life along with her two children in a well near her village in Chittoor Rural mandal on Tuesday night.
Locals found the bodies floating in the well on Wednesday. Her husband and his parents fled from the village.
Sarala’s parents alleged that her in-laws had dumped the bodies in the well after killing them. In this backdrop, the postmortem report revealed that the child she was carrying was a male.
Chittoor SP S.V. Rajasekhar Babu said Gurunadham was in police custody. He had told the police that they had not gone for scanning to know the child’s gender.
