Telangana: Vigilance raids seed godowns

Agriculture department officials said there was a shortage of seeds in certain areas due to an artificial crisis.

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Vigilance and Enfor-cement sleuths along with the agriculture department on Tuesday conducted raids across the state on the seed stock points and found that manufacturers, distributors were flouting rules.

Director-General, vigilance and enforcement, Mr Rajeev Trivedi said, “The inspections were primarily carried out by the TS agriculture department. We are assisting them. Ahead of the monsoon, the joint inspections are aimed at detecting spurious seeds and to prevent illegal stocking.”

Agriculture department officials said there was a shortage of seeds in certain areas due to an artificial crisis.

According to the officials at Warangal, an inspection was carried out on Sumanjali Seeds on Hunter Road and Rs 3.06 crore worth of paddy seed stock was found without valid papers. “We asked them to stop sales till they produce the records. They are supposed to maintain the records. Otherwise, it amounts to flouting of rules and the paddy can be considered as unauthorised stock.”

Officials said they haven’t found spurious seeds so far in connection with cotton, chilli and paddy during the inspections.
