SHRC summons Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation staff

The conductor abused and insulted a mentally challenged patient and took Rs 6,570 cash from the patient's father

Chennai: The State Human Rights Commission has summoned deputy manager, driver and conductor of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Virudhunagar district, to appear before the commission on April 25 for abusing and insulting a mentally retarded person when he travelled on a TNSTC bus three months ago.

After taking cash of Rs 6,570 from him the bus driver and conductor forced him to get down from the bus. On a petition from K. Marichamy of Servaikkaranpatti, Madurai, judge D. Jayachandran directed deputy manager (commercial), conductor and driver, TNSTC, Virudhunagar, to appear before the commission for an enquiry on April 25.

In the petition, K. Marichamy stated that he was proceeding to a hospital along with his mentally retarded son, Muthukumar, 20, on January 3, 2018. The government provided a bus pass to him.

If required an assistant is allowed to travel along with him in government buses. Marichamy said, “We were carrying Rs 6,570 for his treatment”. The conductor refused to accept the bus pass and demanded him to buy tickets. They abused and took Rs 6,570 and several original documents from us, he said.

The driver halted the bus far away from the bus stop they were supposed to get down. A complaint was sent to the TNSTC, Virudunagar. As there was no response, he filed the petition before the commission.
