Hyderabad: Undertrial gives cops the slip

In February, prison officials had written to the police to provide more escort while taking Ega to courts.

Hyderabad: An undertrial prisoner accused in fake passport cases hoodwinked the Hyderabad police and escaped from the Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station on Wednesday.

Mohammed Ali Ega, 37, a British national lodged in the Charlapally Central Prison, used probably the simplest trick in the book: He told the police he wanted to take a bath, and escaped from the ventilator of the bathroom.

In February, prison officials had written to the police to provide more escort while taking Ega to courts.

Ega was arrested in December 2016. The Telangana CID brought him to Hyderabad on a transit warrant and lodged him in the Cherlapally prison. He was taken to New Delhi for the hearing of his case at the I additional chief judicial magistrate court in New Delhi in December and February.

He was taken to New Delhi to be produced before Court No. 31 at the Patiala House courts in New Delhi for a hearing on Wednesday.

The escort team comprised Armed Reserve sub-inspector Khaja Naseeruddin, head constables Mohammad Yousuf and B. Mahender Reddy, constables V. Vijay Kumar and Ch. Ravi and reached Delhi on Tuesday. He was produced before the court on Wednesday morning and they were scheduled to return on Wednesday night. “They were at the waiting hall of the Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station. Ega asked the escort to allow him to take his bath and went to the bathroom located inside the hall. The escort gave him permission and removed his handcuffs. Ega escaped from the ventilator,” an official from Central Police Lines, Amberpet, said.

The escort polcie lodged a complaint with the Government Railway Police at the station and informed the CPL headquarters in Hyderabad on Thursday morning. The city police has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
