Hyderabad: Woman tries to smuggle gold, arrested

The gold was concealed in a popcorn maker and a foot massage machine, said the officials.

Hyderabad: An air passenger who arrived at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad in a flight from Dubai was caught while attempting to smuggle 809.92 gm of gold. “The gold was concealed in a popcorn maker and a foot massage machine,” said the officials.

The Air Intelligence Unit officials of the Customs department intercepted a passenger who arrived at Shamshabad on Tuesday night in an Emirates flight from Dubai. While checking the passenger’s baggage, the officials got suspicious and checked the baggage physically only to find a popcorn maker and a foot massager. When they were opened, silver coated frames of gold were found concealed inside.

The AIU officials said “The air passenger had arrived at RGIA in EK 528 from Dubai. The passenger was carrying 809.92 gm of gold, worth Rs 26,07,942.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, officials have arrested one passenger who tried to smuggle 349.35 gm gold worth Rs 11.3 lakh concealed as dials of three wristwatches.
